Selecting an Evidence-Based Intervention

Consumers who want to know what services to use based on the best available evidence, providers who want to know what services to implement, and administrators who want to know what services to promote can search the following lists and registries of EBPs to see if any of the interventions will fit their needs:

  • The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and its Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS) have introduced six Evidence-Based Practice Implementation Resource Kits to encourage the use of evidence-based practices in mental health. Descriptions of the kits and links to PDF and HTML versions can be accessed at: http://www.mentalhealth.samhsa.gov/cmhs/communitysupport/toolkits/about.asp

  • SAMHSA’s National Registry of Evidence-Based Programs and Practices (NREPP) and Model Programs’ resources provide information on substance abuse and mental health EBPs. The NREPP is being redesigned to reflect the most current thought in evidence grading and assessment, but many EBPs can still be accessed through this revision and expansion at: http://www.modelprograms.samhsa.gov/template.cfm?CFID=3498909&CFTOKEN=924063 (Also, be sure to look at the Federal Register Notice requesting feedback on the revisions to NREPP and have your voice heard in the discussion of EBPs by submitting comments. More info is available at: http://www.modelprograms.samhsa.gov/template.cfm?page=nreppover, and at our e-community message board.)

  • Oregon’s Office of Mental Health and Addictive Services has developed a list of EBPs in an effort to have 75% of all of its state-provided behavioral health services evidence-based by 2009. This list with PDF descriptions of each service can be accessed at: http://www.oregon.gov/DHS/mentalhealth/ebp/main.shtml

  • TEC’s EBP Metabase v 1.0 is a searchable database of meta-analyses related of mental health interventions. Find an intervention related to your outcomes of interest and review the evidence of effectiveness at: http://tecathsri.org/ebp_search.asp?stmode=start.

It is important to remember that as transformation continues in the mental health system, EBPs are not yet available for all outcomes, populations, and settings. If you are unable to find an EBP with these resources, please contact TEC. We will assist you in any way possible to find an effective program that meets your needs and is supported by strong evidence.
